Basketball Program Overview
Wheaton Park District offers youth basketball programs for players of all skill levels and competitive interests, from kindergartners just learning the game to middle schoolers preparing for high school competition.
The In-House League is open to players in kindergarten through 8th grade and focuses on fun, sportsmanship, and foundational skill development in dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense. Equal playing time is enforced; all players receive a uniform, and players in grades 1-8 practice once during the week with games on Saturdays. Kindergartners have both practices and games on Saturdays. Note that currently rostered travel basketball players are not eligible to participate in the in-house league.
For players looking for a more competitive experience, the Boys Feeder and Girls Feeder programs offer travel basketball for grades 3–8 (boys) and 4–8 (girls) during the winter season. Players are organized into teams: Wheaton Vipers (boys, grades 3-5), Wheaton Thunder (girls, grades 4-5), and high school feeder teams for grades 6-8. The teams are aligned with either Wheaton North Falcons or Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers. These feeder programs do not conflict with middle school basketball schedules. Practices begin in October, with two weekly practices per team.
All travel teams compete in the DuPage Youth Travel Basketball League (DYTBL), which guarantees 14–20 league games per season. Teams also participate in tournaments, shootouts, and playoffs, giving each team a minimum of 25 total games. Playoffs take place in late February or early March. Teams are placed in gold, silver, or bronze divisions based on tryout results, and equal playing time is not guaranteed in the feeder programs.
Volunteer coaches are needed at all levels. For questions about any basketball program, contact the Athletic Department at 630-690-4880.
